America’s infant mortality has increased and life span has plunged.

Why is this happening? What has changed over the last two decades that could possibly explain this huge downward spiral in the health of our nation?

Well, one thing definitely changed in the mid-1990s: the food we eat.

A little over twenty years ago, scientists started tinkering with our food supply, taking genes from one species and forcing it into the DNA of other species…

Creating new organisms that did not exist in nature… organisms that are now part of the majority of the food we eat.

I’m talking about crops that have been genetically engineered to either produce their own pesticides or withstand mega doses of herbicides.

They came with the promise they would increase crop yields and profits. So, many in the farm community welcomed this innovation.

As a result, starting in 1996, these genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, spread rapidly through U.S. fields.


This was also a big bonanza for the biotech firms that developed these crops.

You see, genetically engineered seeds are patentable. So the companies that develop these seeds can have total control of the market. This represents billions in sales.

For example, take a look at a company named Monsanto. With a 90% market share, it dominates the GMO industry.

And farmers who purchase Monsanto’s patented GMO seeds have to sign a contract. This agreement forbids farmers from keeping any new seed produced by the crop for the following year, or even saving leftover seeds.

In other words, farmers must agree to use the seeds for one-time only. This basically ensures a perpetual stream of cash flow for the company because farmers will have to buy new seeds every year.

It was a win-win situation for the farmers and biotech firms. The farmers get bigger crops that can grow in any conditions. The biotech firms make money selling their seeds.

And boy, did it produce profits…

My point is this…

A lot of people got very rich, and very powerful selling these genetically modified crops. There’s a lot of money at stake here.

But here’s the scary thing…

According to new scientific evidence, these genetically modified crops may be extremely dangerous to our families.

And just like people used to smoke cigarettes because they had no idea it could kill them, most Americans today are eating this food because they are unaware of the risks.

They do it because government agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (or FDA), have said these genetically modified crops are safe.

But can we trust them?

Well, as you will see in this presentation, the FDA has actually never conducted any studies on humans to prove this food is safe.

In other words, this government agency has intentionally unleashed a host of potentially harmful foods onto American dinner tables.

I know this may be hard to believe…

But 44,000 pages of internal memos from the FDA show its own scientists agreed that GMOs could create unpredictable, unsafe, and hard-to-detect allergens, toxins, diseases, and nutritional problems.

In a moment, I’ll reveal all the details of these disturbing memos – including details from a little known document marked as “CONFIDENTIAL Read and Destroy” by one of the biggest GMO firms.

Believe me, this is the smoking gun they hoped we’d never find. You’ll see the details, and be able to make up your own mind on whether I’m right or wrong.

The Secret Killer in Your Food


Did you know that about 80% of your immune system resides in your gut?

And, of course, the gut is the main interface between our body and any kind of food.

So, if for any reason, your body sees food as an alien object, something that cannot be found in nature…

Your immune system might attack it, creating an inflammatory reaction. In other words, inflammation flares up whenever your body feels threatened.

Well, it turns out…. Since 1996, when GM foods were introduced into our diet, several digestive disorders related to gut inflammation have skyrocketed. Take a look…

Is this just a coincidence? Well, think about this for a moment…

Scientists have changed the gene sequence of some of the food we eat, making it a foreign object… So it shouldn’t be a surprise that our immune system might be reacting to this new kind of food, causing inflammation.

And that’s a big deal because the health damages can go well beyond diseases related to digestion.

You see, inflammation has been linked to a number of health problems.

In fact, recent medical research shows that hidden inflammation, the kind that originates in your gut, is at the root of ALL chronic illness we experience - conditions like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, depression, cancer, and even autism.

“It destabilizes cholesterol deposits in the coronary arteries, leading to heart attacks and potentially even strokes.”

It chews up nerve cells in the brains of Alzheimer's victims. It may even foster the proliferation of abnormal cells and facilitate their transformation into cancer.”

“In other words, chronic inflammation may be the engine that drives many of the most feared illnesses of middle and old age.

For me, it was shocking to find out that the food my family was eating… the food I fed my two boys and girls when they were growing up could cause inflammation and lead to all these deadly diseases.

But the science is clear.

Inflammation happens for a reason… it happens when a bacterium or toxin or some other irritant triggers an immune response.

And several studies have shown that genetically modified food is triggering that response.

For example, Dr. P. M. Bhargava, one of the world's top biologists, has reviewed 600 scientific journals. He concluded that GM foods in the US are largely responsible for the increase in many serious diseases.

And Dr. Robin Bernhoft, a Harvard-trained doctor and director of the Bernhoft Center for Advanced Medicine in Ojai, California, has found that patient health improves when GM foods are removed from their diet.

Dr. Miguel Gonzalez, a physician in California, believes that “genetically modified foods are causing inflammation of the bowel.”

And research from the American Academy of Environmental Medicine states that

“several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysfunction, accelerated aging, dysfunction of cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen
and gastrointestinal system.”

As you can see, many scientists believe that GM food is what’s triggering inflammation.

And if you don’t address that properly, you may end up with coronary artery disease, arthritis, cancer and other chronic illnesses.

Did you Know You Could Get Cancer… 
Just from Drinking Milk?

For the past 20 years, much of the nation’s milk has come from cows injected with a genetically engineered growth hormone known as rBST.

Write those letters down…


After we’re done here today, you should go to your fridge and look at the milk you have. Make sure your milk is rBST-free.

But before you go check, let me explain how dangerous those letters can be…

Farmers inject rBST into cows every two weeks to increase hormonal activity, boosting milk production by as much as 25%.

That’s great for dairy producers, who are able to get more milk from each cow, increasing their profits. It’s also great for the biotech companies that sell the hormone.

There’s only one big problem: this hormone has been linked to various types of cancer.

That probably explains why all 27 countries of the European Union, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada have all banned its use in milk destined for human consumption.

Sadly, the U.S. is the only developed nation that allows rBST.

The Cancer Prevention Coalition has even submitted several petitions to the FDA asking them to ban this hormone.

But the FDA has ignored their requests. Maybe that explains why the U.S. has the highest rates of cancer in the world.


A study done by Susan Hackinson, ScD, of Harvard Medical School, has showed that this hormone increases the risk of developing breast cancer seven-fold in women under 50… and that it increases a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer nine-fold.

Dr. Jenny Pompilio, a physician with Kaiser Permanente in Oregon says: “It’s been known for years that this particular hormone is linked with cancers effects on the endocrine system.”

Now, if you’re like me, you’re probably asking yourself: “how in the hell has the FDA approved this?”

You would think that, after approving it, the FDA would at least slap a label on rBST milk saying something like “warning: could cause cancer.”

But that’s not what happened.

Dairies that use this dangerous hormone don’t even have to disclose that information to consumers.

And the FDA didn’t stop at forbidding GM labeling… It went one step further.

In 1994 they wrote a regulation requiring that any food label describing the product as bovine growth hormone free must also include these words:

“The FDA has determined no significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rBST and non rBST treated cows”

So, the FDA basically restricted dairies that didn’t use the hormone from pointing out that their milk was different from the genetically modified kind.

Maybe you’ve seen this statement on your jug of milk. And since it comes from the FDA, I bet you believed in it… like I did.

But did you know that this rBST statement has never been verified by either Monsanto or FDA studies? If a private company had made such statement, it would be charged with fraud.

And it gets worse… the FDA consistently covered up warnings from its own scientists about the health hazards of GMOs.

The details are buried inside 44,000 pages of FDA’s internal files. I’ll reveal the content of these documents in a moment.

First, it’s important that you understand that the approval of rBST reveals…

One of the Biggest Government Lies: 
“The Food We Eat is Safe”

You see, the FDA didn’t perform any kind of testing in regards to rBST. FDA official John Scheid later admitted to the Associated Press that the agency based their approval simply on a summary provided by Monsanto.

Former FDA veterinarian Richard Burroughs, who was a lead reviewer in this hormone’s approval process, said the drug “was approved prematurely without adequate information”… and that “the whole rBST thing was bad science and bad regulation.”

The European Union even investigated the FDA’s faulty approval process and concluded that the hormone’s safety had never been proved.

Canadian scientists also analyzed the FDA’s approval process and wrote a lengthy and scathing report. If you google “Gaps Analysis Report”, you can read it online.

The report recounted omissions, contradictions, weaknesses, and gaps in the FDA's approval process. It concluded that…

“The required long-term studies to ascertain human safety were NOT conducted. Hence, the risk of sterility, infertility, birth defects, cancer and immunological disorder was not addressed.”

Are you starting to see how dangerous this food scandal is?

Thanks to the FDA, you may have unknowingly drunk countless glasses of a dangerous substance… or poured it into bowls of cereal for your children and grandchildren.

And, to this date, the agency continues to allow milk from cows treated with rBST.

Unless it’s labeled organic or “rBST free”, everything in the dairy section of your grocery store, including yogurt and cheese, probably includes milk from cows injected with this hormone.

Unfortunately, milk is just the tip of the iceberg.

With the help of the FDA, GMOs have spread throughout our food supply. It’s virtually everywhere.

The obvious question is… why would the FDA put Americans at risk?

Well, it turns out the Deputy Commissioner for Policy at the FDA in 1993 had strong links to Monsanto. He had worked for the company, before joining the FDA.

In fact, after helping secure the approval of rBST, he went back to Monsanto to work as its Vice President for public policy.

Today, he’s once again at the FDA, working closely with the Obama administration on food safety.

You can’t make this stuff up.

And over the past two decades, the FDA has been doing everything it can to keep us in the dark… to keep us from finding out how dangerous GM foods really are.

As a result…

We’ve All Become Unwitting Guinea Pigs In
An Experiment of Massive Proportions

Take soybeans, for example.

Scientists took genes from bacteria and inserted into the DNA of soy, creating a new kind of crop that can withstand mega doses of an herbicide called Roundup.

They call it Roundup-ready soy… and it accounts for 94% of soybeans in the U.S.

So, farmers can spray these crops as often as they like. The herbicide will kill all weeds, but leave the soy plants intact.

This is great because the farmers who buy Roundup-ready soy also have to buy Roundup, which is the company’s best-selling herbicide.

As you can probably imagine, this scheme is very lucrative for biotech companies.

The only problem is that new studies show that GM soy can be dangerous to your health.

You might say “but I don’t eat a lot of soy products, so what’s the big deal?”

Well, did you know soy is in a thousand places we might never expect it, usually in the form of “vegetable oil”? You’ll find it in salad dressings, soups, and imitation meat products.

In fact, if you or anyone in your family eats any kind of processed food, such as cereals, cookies, cakes, chips, crackers, muffins, mac n’ cheese, chicken nuggets, it’s very likely you’re eating genetically modified soy.

And numerous studies with animals have showed that…

It Can Cause Damage in the Liver,
Lung, and Pancreas

UK scientists at the York Nutritional Laboratory have linked GM soy to digestion problems, headache, lethargy, acne, and eczema. And they sounded the alarm saying that their findings “provide real evidence that GM food could have a tangible, harmful impact on the human body.”

And a human study from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences said that parts of the altered gene in GM soy went on to live in our gut. The study concluded this has the potential to change our immune system in unpredictable ways.

Dr. John Boyles, an allergy specialist from Ohio, says “GM soy is so dangerous that I tell people never to eat it.”

Even babies are at risk…

Because soy is used in 25% of all baby formulas in the US. Dr. Daniel Sheehan, a toxicologist formerly with the FDA, has warned that infants who drink this formula are part of a “large, uncontrolled and basically unmonitored human infant experiment.”

So, how can you get around this problem?

Well, one easy step you can take is to avoid processed or packaged foods.

You see, aside from soybeans, in the U.S., 90% of sugar beets and 88% of corn are also genetically modified.

These items are basic components of pretty much everything you can find in a grocery store. So, every time you or your family eat processed or packaged food, there’s a good chance you’re taking a bite of a GM ingredient.

And that’s just one simple solution. In a moment, I’ll show you more than a dozen food secrets that will help you avoid GM food and improve your life.

As I mentioned earlier, I can't guarantee they will make you live to 100 years old. But I can promise that you'll be greatly better off than those who continue to eat potentially dangerous food.

First, let me show you why…

You Could Be Eating a
Dangerous Toxin Every Day

Just like soy, corn also seems to be everywhere. High-fructose corn syrup lurks in foods that don’t seem “corny” to us: candy, breads, ketchup, granola bars, and even English muffins.

While soy has been genetically modified to withstand herbicides, corn has been genetically modified to produce its own insecticide.

Scientists took genes from a bacterium that produces an insecticide and inserted it into corn. With that new genetic material, the corn can produce its own bacterial toxins, called Bt protein.

It’s a toxin that’s design to break open the stomach of insects that try to eat the corn. So, the corn’s cells produce a toxic protein that kills bugs.

The crop itself is the pesticide.

When I discovered this information, the first thing that came to my mind was…

“Wait a second… if this toxin destroys the insect’s gut, could it do the same to me and my family?”

According to the FDA, this corn is safe. They say Bt protein is toxic only to insects. But there’s new evidence that shows Bt protein could damage humans as well.

A recent study published in the International Journal of Biological Sciences concluded that GM corn damages the liver and kidneys.

The Journal of Hematology Diseases published research showing that it destroys red blood cells, disrupt blood clotting and cause organ degeneration and tissue damage in mice.

Joe Cummins, Professor Emeritus of Genetics at the University of Western Ontario, has also concluded that the Bt toxin could damage the small intestine.

And UK’s Institute of Science in Society has said that Bt “kills human kidney cells” and that its approval was based on “inadequate safety assessments.”

No wonder genetically modified corn is already outlawed in Hungary, Austria, Germany, Greece, and Luxembourg.

But Americans are unknowingly consuming this Bt toxin every single time they eat something that has GM corn in it.


Just look at these rats… they were fed genetically modified corn… the same corn you buy from the grocery store… and feed your family.

In this particular study, GM corn caused rats to develop horrifying tumors, widespread organ damage, and premature death.

Rats that ate GM corn saw four times the number of deaths and an 80% increase in cancer compared to those that ate conventional corn.

Despite all this shocking evidence, agricultural companies and the FDA continue to claim that GM corn is safe because, according to them, our body naturally degrades the Bt toxin.

If that’s true, then how can you explain the fact that toxic pesticides from GM food crops have been found in unborn babies?

In a study that analyzed dozens of samples from women, scientists found traces of the toxin in 93% of the pregnant mothers and in 80% of the umbilical cords.

The research suggested the chemicals were entering the body through eating meat, milk and eggs from farm livestock that were fed GM corn.

And UK’s The Telegraph reported that the study’s conclusion “appears to contradict the food industry’s long-standing claim that any potentially harmful chemicals added to crops would pass safely through the body.”

If you have kids in your family, I’m sure you know exactly how I felt when I discovered all this shocking information…

Because, perhaps, the most disturbing fact about our food supply is that….

Our Little Ones Are At Risk

Are your children or grandchildren suffering from chronic ear infections, coughs, runny noses and headaches? Eczema and itchy skin? Or frequent sleepiness, crankiness, or sickness?

If they suffer from symptoms like these, maybe their immune system is overreacting to the hormones in that apparently healthy glass of milk…

Or that soy protein that’s virtually in every processed food… or to the high-fructose corn syrup that sweetens everything from sugar-free cereals to whole wheat bread.

You see, kids are much more sensitive to toxins. So, they’re very vulnerable to GM food.

Perhaps that explains why, in the last twenty years, the incidence of childhood ailments like food allergies, asthma, ADHD and autism have increased dramatically in the U.S.

During our research, we came across the opinion of a pediatrician who has been treating children for over 30 years. She has also been named one of “America’s Top Pediatricians” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America.

She says that over the last decade she has seen a huge jump in the number of children with chronic diseases—digestive issues, profound food allergies, increased immunological disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and more.

She believes GM food is behind this epidemic. And according to her,

“We are a Living Science Experiment.”

Take food allergies for example…

Think back to when you were younger.

How many of your friends had peanut allergies?

Did your brother or sisters have to carry around an Epi-Pen? Did they have to be ready to shoot their bodies full of adrenaline if they ate something wrong?

When I was growing up, food allergies were extremely rare. In fact, I don’t remember having any childhood friends who were allergic to nuts.

But today, we can’t even send our children to school with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich…

Because, chances are, a kid in their class is deadly allergic to peanuts… or one of the other new allergies that are popping up like crazy.

And it’s not just our anecdotal proof we have. Science now verifies that something has gone horribly wrong with our food supply.

Dr. Jacqueline Pongracic, head of the allergy department at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, says:

“I've been treating children in the field of allergy immunology for 15 years, and in recent years I've really seen the rates of food allergy skyrocket. More than half of the children I care for have a food allergy.”

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, food allergies affect more than six million children in America. That’s twice the number of cases recorded in 2007.

So again… what’s gone wrong?

Peanut allergy alone kills hundreds of American kids each year. And its incidence has increased 10-fold since 1997, the year GM soy was introduced into the market place.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the number of hospitalizations related to food allergies has also increased 265% in the decade following the introduction of GM food.

And a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology concluded that genetically modified peanuts and soybeans can trigger allergic reactions in human body.

In other words, all these studies suggest that, in many occasions, our kids’ immune system perceives GM food as a threat, which leads to allergies.

They suggest the consumption of GM food explains the current food allergy epidemic.

In other words, giant corporations literally send employees to go work for the FDA and other regulatory agencies, where they can write food policies that will favor the companies.

To this date, the current Deputy Commissioner for Policy at the FDA is a former Monsanto employee.

As a key regulator in charge of food safety, he has the ability to control what does and doesn’t show up on your family’s table.

Using You and Your Family as Lab Rats

In 1992, when the FDA approved GMOs, the agency claimed there was an overall consensus among scientists that GM food was safe.

But now we know that’s a big lie.

In 1998 a lawsuit forced 44,000 pages of internal files from the FDA into the public domain.

These memos reveal that the consensus was the exact opposite. Scientists urged the FDA to do long-term safety studies to guard against possible allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems.

For example, FDA scientists recommended testing every GM food “before it enters the marketplace” because of “the possibility of unexpected, accidental changes in genetically engineered plants.”

According to one of the memos, Dr. Linda Kahl, an FDA compliance officer, warned the agency that “the processes of genetic engineering lead…to different risks.”

And Dr. Jim Maryanski, the FDA Biotechnology Coordinator at the time, admitted that there was no consensus about the safety of genetically engineered foods in the scientific community.

But bureaucrats at the FDA ignored the scientists’ warnings and allowed GM food crops onto the market.

Dr. Maryanski also admitted that the approval of GMOs was based on politics, not science. He said that “the determination whether a new protein is safe can be made by the company.”

In other words, the FDA- the agency so many naïve Americans think is here to protect us- allowed food companies to determine the safety of GM food.

But one of Monsanto’s own executives said at the time that “Monsanto should NOT have to vouch the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible.

Dr. Philip Regal, a professor at the University of Minnesota and an internationally recognized plant expert once stated: “Over the last fifteen years, I and other scientists have put the FDA on notice about the potential dangers of genetically engineered foods.”

According to Andrew Kimbrell, who at the time was Executive Director of the International Center for Technology Assessment, “by failing to require testing and labeling of genetically engineered foods, the FDA has made consumers unknowing guinea pigs for potentially harmful food substances.”

And a report by eight renowned international experts concluded that “agricultural GM companies and evaluation committees systematically overlook the side effects of GMOs and pesticides.”

The study also says they greatly underestimate “the initial signs of diseases like cancer and diseases of the hormonal, immune, nervous and reproductive systems, among others.”

And it gets worse… thefood industry’s control goes well beyond the government. So let me show you exactly how…

It Keeps the American Public in the Dark

Big food companies provide funding to most food research, conferences, and fellowships.

This private funding certainly seems to affect the way professors and scientists think, act, and publish.

Researchers have a huge incentive to write only good things about GM crops, otherwise they may lose funding… or even worse, their jobs.

A study from Food and Water Watch concluded that this corporate funding “taints the independence and objectivity of agricultural research.”

These companies have also been systematically blocking researchers from using its patented gene modified seeds.

According to Doug Sherman of the Union of Concerned Scientists, “multibillion-dollar agricultural corporations, including Monsanto and Syngenta, have often refused to provide independent scientists with seeds, or they’ve set restrictive conditions that severely limit research options.”

26 researchers from different universities even wrote a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency protesting restricted access to seeds. The letter states that “no truly independent research can be legally conducted on many critical questions involving these crops. The biotech industry is completely driving the bus.”

The magazine Scientific American has also reported that “only studies that the seed companies have approved ever see the light of a peer-reviewed journal. In a number of cases, experiments that had the implicit go-ahead from the seed company were later blocked from publication because the results were not good.”

In order words, these companies basically choose who gets to do research and what topics are studied and published.

They also try to destroy the reputation and careers of any scientists who stand in their way.

Perhaps, biologist Arpad Pusztai is the best example. He had more than 300 articles and 12 books to his credit and was the world’s top expert in his field.

In the 1990s, he conducted a study that showed that rats that ate GM potatoes developed potentially pre-cancerous cell growth, smaller brains and testicles, partially atrophied livers, and damaged immune systems.

After his shocking discovery, he decided to reveal his findings on national TV.

Two days later he was fired and silenced with threats of a lawsuit. His team was dismantled. And the government, with the help of big corporations, launched a smear campaign to destroy his reputation.

Many other scientists have been threatened and fired from their jobs as well.

That’s why University of California at Berkeley professor Ignacio Chapela says that “it’s very hard for us to publish in this field. People are scared.”

That’s a big reason why most Americans have no idea how dangerous GM foods are.

In 1975, for example, a company study found that PCBs caused tumors in rats. They ordered its conclusion changed from “slightly tumorigenic” to “doesn’t appear to be cause cancer.”

In one of the internal memos, one of the managers justified the company’s despicable actions by saying “we can't afford to lose one dollar of business.”

No wonder Monsanto is known as “the most evil corporation in the world.” They have proved time and time again that no price is too high to pay when it comes to achieving their profit goals… even when the price is that of human lives.

And that’s not the only example.

The company has also sold other highly toxic products, such as Agent Orange, DDT, and Aspartame. And the company said they were all safe for humans.

But today, Agent Orange and DDT are outlawed due to the massive damage they cause to human life. Agent Orange, for example, has killed and maimed an estimated 400,000 people and lead to 500,000 birth defects.

And scientific research has linked Aspartame to birth defects, cancer, diabetes, emotional disorders and seizures.

Today, Monsanto is the leader in genetically modified seeds. And they say GM food is safe.

Given their track record, I wouldn’t trust them if I were you.

Collectively, microorganisms outweigh the human population by 100 million times. They're all around you, and inside you. Your gastrointestinal tract alone houses some 100 trillion bacteria.

The microorganisms in your gut, commonly referred to as your microbiome, are responsible for about 80 percent of your immune system function, and these gut bacteria outnumber your body's cells by about 10 to one.

As noted in the featured Frontline documentary, The Trouble With Antibiotics,1American farmers routinely use antibiotics to make their livestock grow bigger, faster (in addition to preventing disease caused by cramped, filthy quarter, and an unnatural diet). After decades of this practice, antibiotic-resistance in humans has risen substantially.

We’ve also come to realize that, scientifically, we’ve barely scratched the surface with regards to everything there is to know about bacteria; how they work, and why we might actually need them.

Far from being a scourge, bacteria of all kinds serve important roles in human health. It’s a double-edged sword. On the one hand we need bacteria; on the other, when our microbiome becomes unbalanced, it can kill us.

Microbes Rule...

For example, it is microbes in the soil that are largely responsible for plant growth and nutrient uptake. Adding plant nutrients without regard for nourishing these microbes is a recipe for crop failure in the long-term.

In recent years, we've also started to gain a greater understanding of the role gut microbes play in human health and disease—and it's a very significant one.

We're also seeing that indiscriminately killing bacteria in an effort to achieve cleanliness and health comes at a steep price. In fact, antibiotic resistance has quickly turned into a worldwide health threat of massive proportions.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention2 (CDC), two million American adults and children become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria each year, and at least 23,000 of them die as a direct result.

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as MRSA, alone kills more Americans each year than the combined total of emphysema, HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, and homicide.3

The victims include young, otherwise healthy people, raising suspicions that theMRSA infections originate from the food they eat. Drug-resistant tuberculosis, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea are also on the rise.

As reported by Frontline, researchers have found that people living close to confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) also suffer drug-resistant infections at much higher rates than others, again suggesting that antibiotic-resistant bacteria originate from large-scale agriculture.

We've Wasted One of Medicine's Most Important Tools

What we’re seeing is the evolution of bacteria—and we’ve catalyzed that evolution. As it turns out, the use of antibiotics in agriculture breeds these hardy bacteria very efficiently. Over time, microorganisms have learned to teach each other how to outsmart the best pharmaceutical drugs we have to offer, and they are winning the battle.

Many experts have issued strong warnings, saying that we are quickly reverting back to the pre-antibiotic age when some of the most important advances in modern medicine – intensive care, organ transplants, care for premature babies, and surgeries – will no longer be possible.

We're already very close to the end of the road where ALL antibiotics fail, and once that happens, it will be the end of modern medicine as we know it. Common illnesses such as bronchitis or strep throat may turn into deadly sepsis.

Surgeries previously considered low risk or "routine," such as hip replacements, might suddenly be too risky without antibiotics, and complex surgeries like organ transplants may not be survivable anymore.

One of the most prestigious research hospitals in the US recently struggled with an outbreak of a highly lethal antibiotic-resistant superbug called Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)4—a bacterium that has developed resistance to multiple drugs. KPC is not alone in this feat.  

A 2013 paper by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) titled "Antibiotic Resistance in Foodborne Pathogens,"5 report that between 1973 and 2011, there were 55 antibiotic-resistant foodborne outbreaks in the US, and more than half of them involved pathogens resistant to five or more antibiotics.

How Did This Epidemic of Antibiotic Resistance Occur?

Antibiotic overuse and inappropriate use in medicine is one factor. As much as half of all antibiotics used in clinics and hospitals are inappropriately used.6 But the routine use of antibiotics in agriculture is likely at the very heart of the matter.

First of all, agriculture accounts for about 80 percent of all antibiotics used in the US, so it's really a primary source of antibiotic exposure. Second, it is the continuous use of low dose antibiotics that really allows the bacteria to survive and become increasingly hardy and drug resistant.

At present, 24.6 million pounds of antibiotics are administered to livestock in the US every year for purposes other than treating disease, such as making the animals grow bigger faster. When eating meat from antibiotic-treated animals, you consume low dose antibiotics. For example, 80 different antibiotics are allowed in cows’ milk!

Treated animal products may also be contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 22 percent of antibiotic-resistant illness in humans is in fact linked to food. In the words of associate director of the CDC Dr. Srinivasan:7

“The more you use an antibiotic, the more you expose a bacteria to an antibiotic, the greater the likelihood that resistance to that antibiotic is going to develop. So the more antibiotics we put into people, we put into the environment, we put into livestock, the more opportunities we create for these bacteria to become resistant.”

In the featured documentary, researchers using state of the art genome sequencing were able to compare E.coli samples found on supermarket meat with E.coli samples collected from patients with drug-resistant urinary tract infections. In this way, they were able to genetically link more than 100 urinary tract infections to tainted supermarket meat products...

Avoiding antibiotic-resistance is but one of several good reasons to avoid meats and animal products from animals raised in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs). This is partly why grass-fed and grass-finished antibiotic- and hormone-free meat is the ONLY type of meat I recommend—again because it is repetitive low-dose exposure that allows bacteria to adapt and develop strong resistance. Most Americans eat meat several times a week, and that kind of exposure can add up.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meanwhile, has known for more than 12 years that routine use of antibiotics in livestock is harmful to human health, yet it has taken no meaningful action. Promptings to voluntarily reduce usage has not resulted in positive change. On the contrary, the most recent FDA report shows that antibiotic usage actually increased by 16 percent between 2009 and 2012, and nearly 70 percent of the antibiotics used are considered “medically important” for humans.8

Another contributing factor is the genetic engineering of our foods. As Jeffrey Smith explained at a recent GMO Summit, it's possible that GMOs from food can transfer genetic material to your normal gut bacteria, conferring antibiotic resistance and turning them into superbugs. GMOs have been scientifically proven to activate and deactivate hundreds if not thousands of genes, and we have no idea about the risks associated with this, as no one has studied it.

What's the Solution?

The impending superbug crisis has a four-prong solution:

  • Improved infection prevention, with a focus on strengthening your immune system naturally. Avoiding sugars, processed foods, and grains is foundational for this. Adding in traditionally fermented and cultured foods is equally important, as this will help optimize your microflora
  • More responsible use of antibiotics in human medicine
  • Limiting use of antibiotics in livestock animals, along with a return to biodynamic farming and a complete overhaul of our food system
  • Innovative new approaches to the treatment of infections from all branches of science, natural as well as allopathic. Fortunately, Mother Nature gives us a cornucopia of botanicals with inherent antibiotic activity that does not promote resistance like antibiotic drugs do. What You Can Do Right Now to Avoid Promoting Antibiotic Resistance

When it comes to avoiding antibiotic-resistant disease, one major key is to keep your immune system healthy and strong. This is primarily done through lifestyle choices such as proper diet, sleep, stress management, and exercise. In terms of diet, remember to opt for whole organic foods, raised without antibiotics and preferably locally sourced.

Optimizing your own immune system function will help keep you safe from developing a potentially lethal infection in the first place. I also urge you to consider the following strategies, which will help curtail the spread of antibiotic resistance in general. While the problem of antibiotic resistance needs to be stemmed through public policy on a nationwide level, the more people who get involved on a personal level, the better.

Such strategies include:

  • Use antibiotics only when absolutely necessaryFor example, antibiotics are typically unnecessary for most ear infections, and they do NOT work on viruses. They only work on bacterial infections, and even then, they're best reserved for more serious infections.
  • Avoid antibacterial household products, such as antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers, and wipes, etc., as these also promote antibiotic resistance by allowing the strongest bacteria to survive and thrive.
  • Properly wash your hands with warm water and plain soap, to prevent the spread of bacteria. Be particularly mindful of washing your hands and kitchen surfaces after handling raw meats, as about half of all meat sold in American grocery stores is likely to be contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. Avoid antibiotic soaps that typically have dangerous chemicals like triclosan.
  • Take common-sense precautions in the kitchen: Kitchens are notorious breeding grounds for disease-causing bacteria, courtesy of contaminated meat products, including antibiotic-resistant strains of E-coli. To avoid cross-contamination between foods in your kitchen, I suggest adhering to the following recommendations:
  • Use a designated cutting board, preferably wood, not plastic, for raw meat and poultry, and never use this board for other food preparation, such as cutting up vegetables. Color coding your cutting boards is a simple way to distinguish between them
  • To sanitize your cutting board, be sure to use hot water and detergent. Simply wiping it off with a rag will not destroy the bacteria
  • For an inexpensive, safe, and effective kitchen counter and cutting board sanitizer, use 3% hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Keep each liquid in a separate spray bottle, and then spray the surface with one, followed by the other, and wipe off
  • Coconut oil can also be used to clean, treat, and sanitize your wooden cutting boards. It's loaded with lauric acid that has potent antimicrobial actions. Olive oil is another alternative. The fats will also help condition the wood
  • Purchase organic, antibiotic-free meats and other foods. Reducing the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a significant reason for making sure you're only eating grass-fed, organically-raised meats and animal products. Besides growing and raising your own, buying your food from responsible, high-quality, sustainable sources is your best bet, and I strongly encourage you to support the small family farms in your area.

    GMO Corn FieldMichael Specter's story in The New Yorker about Dr. Vandana Shiva's work to protect public health from the effects of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) skewed the facts and fell short of the magazine's usually high standards for fairness. 

    In the piece published in the August 20th issue (and in a subsequent podcast on The New Yorker's website), Specter makes it clear that he does not approach the topic simply as a journalist, but also as a strong believer in GMOs. He makes no secret of the fact that he considers opposition to GMOs to be unfounded.

    But Specter makes his case by ignoring a great deal of evidence that directly contradicts his opinions. By ignoring important facts and questions – scientific, economic and legal – he allows his personal biases to undermine journalistic balance. The end product is a story that mirrors the false myths perpetuated by Monsanto Company on its website and does a true disservice to New Yorkerreaders.

    Instead of allowing readers to weigh both sides of the argument and decide for themselves, Specter decides for them. He erases one side of the debate in order to tip the scales in favor of GMOs. Readers of his piece, "Seeds of Doubt," could easily come away with a false impression that the debate over the utility and safety of GMOs is settled. Nothing could be further from the truth.

    The dangers posed by GMOs are a mainstream concern, and the debate over their safety and value to society is far from over. Specter's failure to acknowledge this undermines his argument in support of GMOs and harms The New Yorker's reputation for quality journalism.

    Specter roots his critique of Dr. Shiva in easily disproven myths that are commonly repeated by the biotech industry, Monsanto Company and other GMO producers (Monsanto et al.), and their supporters. 

    Below, we illuminate his major errors and omissions, providing links to supporting research and articles that refute them. We encourage those who took the time to read Specter's article to give equal time to the facts and voices he chose to ignore completely.

    Error #1: Distorting the Relationship Between GMOs and Famine

    Specter roots his attack on Dr. Shiva's activism in a commonly repeated industry myth about the relationship between GMOs and famine. Just as Monsanto once claimed that a world without the carcinogenic pesticide DDT would be a world overrun by death and bugs, the GMO industry now claims that opposition to GMOs could lead to famines. In repeating this line, Specter specifically invokes India's Bengal Famine of 1943.

    However, as any student of famines knows, the Bengal Famine did not result from a shortage of food. As the work of Nobel Prize-winning Harvard economist Amartya Sen and others have clarified, the famine in Bengal – like many other famines – took place at a time when the country had adequate food production.

    "Famines often take place in situations of moderate to good food availability, without any decline of food supply per head," Dr. Sen wrote in Ingredients of Famine Analysis: Availability and Entitlements.

    "Undernourishment, starvation and famine are influenced by the working of the entire economy and society – not just food production and other agricultural activities," Dr. Sen observed in Famines and Other Crises. "People suffer hunger when they cannot establish their entitlement over an adequate amount of food."

    In Churchill's Secret WarMadhusree Mukerjee documents how Winston Churchill's well-documented disdain for the Indian people resulted in callous indifference toward the famine in Bengal. Mukerjee, a former editor at Scientific American and a recipient of the Guggenheim fellowship, takes Sen's analysis a step further, arguing that Churchill allowed the famine to happen as part of a strategy to maintain the British Raj's control over India.

    There is no question that Churchill, who considered Indians to be "a beastly peopleand a beastly religion" and who referred to Mahatma Gandhi as a"malignant subversive fanatic," repeatedly ignored pleas to address the famine. Instead, the British exported grain from India while millions of Indians starved to death.

    Churchill's unconscionable behavior drew a rebuke from Lord Wavell, the British Viceroy of India, who called it "negligent, hostile and contemptuous." 

    The Bengal Famine of 1943, it should be noted, was not the first famine to unfold while India was under British control. As Mike Davis documented in Late Victorian Holocausts: El Nino Famines and the Making of The Third World, Britain had long employed the practice of exporting food while millions of Indians starved. Writes Davis:

    "Between 1875–1900—a period that included the worst famines in Indian history—annual grain exports increased from 3 to 10 million tons."

    By completely ignoring the causes of the Bengal Famine, Specter misleads readers with this reference. In many cases, including the case he cites, famine occurred despite abundant food production. The problem was that a callous dominant force controlled the food supply and failed to act in the best interests of people.

    Just as the British exported rice and imposed exorbitant taxes while the people of Bengal suffered, Monsanto et al. today impose on poor farmers exceedingly high royalties fees for its seeds. This forces them deeper into poverty and makes it harder for them to feed their families.

    If Monsanto wanted to reduce hunger, it would not be doing so much to impose deeper poverty on farmers through its overpriced monopolistic seed scheme that perpetuates unsustainable dependency. Specter's assertion that profit-hungry corporations are the antidotes to famine makes zero sense to anyone who has studied famine.

    Further, Specter's assertion appears to be based on the debunked myth that genetically engineered seeds increase crop yields. A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists – "Failure to Yield" – found that such claims are overstated. Instead, according to the report, which is based on an analysis of peer-reviewed scientific literature. 

    "Most of the gains are due to traditional breeding or improvement of other agricultural practices." Even in the US, non-GMO crops have shown better yield improvements than GM crops, according to research conducted by the US Department of Agriculture and the University of Wisconsin.

    This report and others show that when genetically engineered products are stacked up against other agricultural methods and technologies, they are only a minor contributor to productivity. Other methods are more important.

    If anything, GMOs and monocultures may actually increase the risk of famine and ecocide because they disrupt our natural food system in unprecedented ways, in violation of the Precautionary Principle. From a recent report published by the Extreme Risk Initiative at the New York University (NYU) School of Engineering:

    "Invoking the risk of famine as an alternative to GMOs is a deceitful strategy, no different from urging people to play Russian roulette in order to get out of poverty. The evocation of famine also prevents clear thinking about not just GMOs but also global hunger. The idea that GMOs will help avert famine ignores evidence that the problem of global hunger is due to poor economic and agricultural policies. Those who care about the supply of food should advocate for an immediate impact on the problem by reducing the amount of corn used for ethanol in the US, which burns food for fuel consuming over 40% of the US crop that could provide enough food to feed 2/3 of a billion people."

    Notably, Monsanto is a top producer of GMO corn designed to streamline the conversion of a food staple into ethanol (rather than alleviate world hunger). Conclusion: Specter's embrace of the GMO industry's famine canard ignores a Nobel Prize-winning economist's research into the root causes of the Bengal Famine, as well as other famines. 

    In addition, the assertion that GMOs increase crop yields (and thus food supply) is exaggerated. In particular, it ignores the availability of other methods, such as conventional crop breeding, that are more successful at increasing productivity. Finally, as the NYU paper indicates, contributing to monocultures of a few crops that are not primarily used for food, much less food that helps malnourished people, likely increases – rather than decreases – food insecurity. This very well-reasoned argument is completely ignored. Additionally, it should be noted that the European public has widely rejected GMO food products – while creating societies with less food insecurity than the United States.

    "We strongly object that the image of the poor and hungry from our countries is being used by giant multinational corporations to push a technology that is neither safe, environmentally friendly, nor economically beneficial to us. We think it will destroy the diversity, the local knowledge and the sustainable agricultural systems that our farmers have developed for millennia, and that it will thus undermine our capacity to feed ourselves." – Statement at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations by the Representative of every African nation, except South Africa, in 1998

    Error #2: Obscuring Vast Difference Between GMO and Natural

    Specter also repeats the false claim that what GMO companies like Monsanto are doing to our food and plants is not fundamentally different than what has been done for centuries. He writes: "Nearly all of the plants we cultivate – corn, wheat, rice, roses, Christmas trees – have been genetically-modified [sic] through breeding to last longer, look better, taste sweeter, or grow more vigorously in arid soil."

    But the vast differences between breeding methods that use processes that commonly occur in nature and those used in GMO corporation laboratories is substantial. For one thing, GMO foods often introduce proteins not previously in the food supply into our foods. The proteins come from organisms such as bacteria that normally cannot place their genes into our food crops, yet they enter our bodies when we consume these GMO foods. We do not fully understand their effects on human health. This is especially true because the regulatory systems do not thoroughly test their safety. In the US, the very companies that want to commercialize these products conduct most of these tests.

    "There is no comparison between tinkering with the selective breeding of genetic components of organisms that have previously undergone extensive histories of selection and the top-down engineering of taking a gene from a fish and putting it into a tomato," say the authors of the NYU Extreme Risk Initiative paper. "Saying that such a product is natural misses the process of natural selection by which things become 'natural.'"

    Dr. George Wald, awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1967, raised the alarm on these concerns long before consumers became aware of them:

    "Recombinant DNA technology [genetic engineering] faces our society with problems unprecedented not only in the history of science, but of life on the Earth… Up to now living organisms have evolved very slowly, and new forms have had plenty of time to settle in. Now whole proteins will be transposed overnight into wholly new associations, with consequences no one can foretell, either for the host organism or their neighbors. It is all too big and is happening too fast. So this, the central problem, remains almost unconsidered. It presents probably the largest ethical problem that science has ever had to face."

    These unanswered questions and ethical problems have resulted in widespread public concern over GMOs. Over 90% of Americans believe GMO products should be labeled, and a majority says they would avoid buying them if they were. As a result, Monsanto et al. have spent millions of dollars to kill proposals for GMO labeling. Monsanto et al. have not been as successful in Europe. Notwithstanding that millions of tons of animal feed are sold to Europe every year, labeling laws coupled with scientific review based on the Precautionary Principle, in tandem with widespread public skepticism of GMO products, have made it nearly impossible for GMO products to be sold there.

    The refusal of European citizens to serve as guinea pigs for Monsanto has hampered the company's efforts to expand there. Clearly, it is not only activists who have expressed legitimate concern about GMOs. Governments and scientists also clearly perceive the difference between natural products and GMOs, and taken steps to guard against potential dangers.

    Yet Specter completely glosses over this issue, making an oversimplified comparison to essentially equate GMOs with natural products and wipe out a key concern of GMO opponents with one clever sentence. But according to the World Health Organization, "Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms (i.e. plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination." In a podcast accompanying Specter's piece on the New Yorker website, Specter goes so far as to deny that organic foods are healthier than GMO foods, a claim that is challenged by many peer-reviewed studies.

    Conclusion: Specter's comparison between modern biotechnological engineering and other types of crossbreeding or hybridization is completely misleading. Many experts, including a Nobel Prize winner, have articulated why GMOs are not typically found in nature and represent uncharted scientific territory. Specter's oversimplification of the differences between natural and GMO products misinforms readers.

    Error #3: Denying the Debate Over GMO Health Dangers

    Specter's piece accepts as fact the false argument that GMOs pose no threat to public health and safety. He ignores credible research and serious questions about the health risks posed by GMOs.

    For example, in 2013, a group of nearly 300 scientists from the European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility (ENSEER) signed a public statement calling on GMO companies, commentators and journalists to stop repeating the false claim that a "scientific consensus" considers GMOs safe.

    "We feel compelled to issue this statement because the claimed consensus on GMO safety does not exist," they wrote. "The claim that it does exist is misleading and misrepresents the currently available scientific evidence and the broad diversity of opinion among scientists on this issue. Moreover, the claim encourages a climate of complacency that could lead to a lack of regulatory and scientific rigor and appropriate caution, potentially endangering the health of humans, animals, and the environment."

    The Center for Food Safety has done an excellent job of highlighting the potential risks of GMOs on human health, including toxicity, allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance, immuno-suppression, cancer and loss of nutrition. Monsanto et al. and their supporters typically deny any link between GMOs and negative health effects, saying there is no scientific evidence to prove it.

    Yet, as the Center for Food Safety points out, "the [FDA] also does not require any pre-market safety testing of GE foods. The agency's failure to require testing or labeling of GE foods has made millions of consumers into guinea pigs, unknowingly testing the safety of dozens of gene-altered food products."

    Specter raises the common claim that no one has been harmed by consuming genetically engineered foods despite many years of widespread use in the US. But as with other possible food health risks, long-term harm to public health can only be determined by doing epidemiological studies, as have been done for numerous other possible health risks. Yet these studies have never been done for genetically engineered foods.

    The paper on GMOs issued by the Extreme Risk Initiative at the NYU School of Engineering pokes more holes in the idea that, because we don't fully understand GMO risks, they must not exist: "A lack of observations of explicit harm does not show an absence of hidden risk … To expose an entire system to something whose potential harm is not understood because extant models do not predict a negative outcome is not justifiable; the relevant variables may not have been adequately identified."

    In addition to the possible dangers posed by the GMOs due to superseding natural genetics, there is an added risk from pesticides. As the New York Times, Reuters, Forbes and many others have confirmed, GMO crops have resulted in theincreased use of pesticides and herbicides.

    This increased use of dangerous toxins on crops poses known risks to human health. Highly credible studies have linked exposure to pesticides to a host of major human illnesses, including many cancers, endocrine disruption, reproductive harm andautism.

    Recent research from the University of California at Davis found that "mothers who lived within roughly one mile of where pesticides were applied were found to have a 60 percent higher risk of having children with any of the spectrum of autism disorders, such as Asperger's syndrome," according to the Sacramento Bee.

    "The weight of evidence is beginning to suggest that mothers' exposures during pregnancy may play a role in the development of autism spectrum disorders,"said Kim Harley, associate director of University of California, Berkeley's Center for Environmental Research and Children's Health.

    The UC Davis study was the most recent study to establish a possible link between pesticide exposure and autism. Clearly, serious questions have been raised and there is more research to be done. Yet Specter fails to mention any of this.

    Conclusion: Once again, Specter omits or ignores important research that raises questions about the health and safety of GMOs. By doing this, he obscures the fact that the concerns Dr. Shiva and others express about the dangers of GMOs are rooted in credible research and legitimate scientific inquiry. Specter's reliance on the classic "straw man" fallacy is what one expects from polemicists writing at Fox News or Breitbart, but is troubling for a journalist who writes for a reputable publication.

    Error #4: Erasing the Link Between Monsanto Seeds and Cotton Farmer Suicides in India

    Specter denies any link between Monsanto and the epidemic of farmer suicides in India, attributing their deaths mainly to the financial stresses of farming. His explanation mirrors the explanation Monsanto has posted on the section of its website dedicated to denying any link to the farmer suicides. And just like Monsanto, Specter ignores a key fact: Monsanto's role in creating the debt and financial stresses that drive many farmers to suicide.

    "Cotton farmers are in a deep crisis since shifting to Bt (GMO) cotton. The spate of farmer suicides in 2011-12 has been particularly severe among Bt cotton farmers." – Memo from the Indian Ministry, quoted in the Hindustan Times

    The marketing of GMO seeds in India has resulted in farmers widely planting them without adequate information about their use and value. Specter greatly exaggerates the GMO seeds' effect on crop yields when authorities there have attributed most yield gains to other technologies, such as increased irrigation.

    These seeds are extremely expensive compared to normal seeds, but they come with the promise of unrealistic results. When these promises prove false, an alarming number of these farmers – drowning in debt significantly worsened by Monsanto's pricing scheme – end their lives by drinking pesticides. As the brother of one suicide victim in Maharashtra, the heart of India's cotton-growing country, told award-winning reporter Andrew Malone in 2008:

    "He was strangled by these magic seeds. They sell us the seeds, saying they will not need expensive pesticides but they do. We have to buy the same seeds from the same company every year. It is killing us. Please tell the world what is happening here."

    Monsanto entraps Indian farmers in an expensive seed monopoly scheme, driving up their levels of indebtedness. Specter and others have tried to shift the blame for these suicides on "debt," but given Monsanto's role in helping to create that debt, this does not absolve the company of responsibility.

    In attacking Dr. Shiva's advocacy for these farmers, Specter cherry-picks the data in order to deny the suicide epidemic altogether. Most flagrantly, he uses the national average of farmer suicides in India to dispute the notion that the number of suicides has increased. Yet, as Dr. Shiva points out in her rebuttal to Specter, the suicide epidemic is focused in the cotton-growing regions of Vidarbha in Maharashtra state – where Monsanto's expensive Bt Cotton (a GMO strain) has taken root.

    From a July 2014 story in The Hindu newspaper:

    "With the highest number of farmer suicides recorded in the year 2013, Maharashtra continues to paint a dismal picture on the agrarian front with over 3,000 farmers taking their lives. According to a recent report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 3,146 farmers killed themselves in the state in 2013. Maharashtra repeated this performance despite the state registering 640 less farm suicides than 2012."

    From a paper published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry in 2008:

    "[The] majority of suicide cases are from cotton growing areas. The cotton farmers in India paying more prices for inputs like seeds, pesticides, fertilizers, electricity, water, and labor whereas the price of cotton has gone down along with decreased productivity"

    Specter's failure to acknowledge the fact that the farmer suicide epidemic is centered in the cotton-growing region, where Monsanto's significantly more expensive Bt GMO cotton seeds now dominate, is a telling omission. Prices have increased exponentially since the introduction of Monsanto's GMO Bt cotton seeds. As the Indian Ministry of Agriculture put it: "Cotton farmers are in a deep crisis since shifting to Bt (GMO) cotton. The spate of farmer suicides in 2011-12 has been particularly severe among Bt cotton farmers."

    In addition to driving up farmer debt by making the cost of seed significantly higher, Monsanto's GMO cotton seeds increase pressure on farmers because these GMO crops need more irrigation in order to grow. In dry regions where water is scarce, this mix of increased seed prices and increased reliance on irrigation can devastate farmers. As the Times of India reported in September, Indian agriculture experts are urging farmers to abandon the GMO seeds and return to natural cotton, which is more affordable and less dependent on irrigation.

    Unlike Specter, the Indian government and other reputable press organizations have taken the Monsanto link to the farmer suicide epidemic seriously. Shifting the blame to "indebtedness" does not absolve Monsanto in the least. Instead, it repeats Specter's use of a specific tactic – oversimplification – to dismiss concerns that contradict his opinion.

    Micha Peled's award-winning documentary on the subject, Bitter Seeds, is mentioned by Specter in passing. We encourage people to watch the film in order to hear from Indian farmers in their own words and understand their perspective on the suicide epidemic and its root causes.

    Conclusion: Yet again, Specter ignores facts and evidence that contradict his opinion in order to mock the serious concerns expressed by credible observers, including the Indian government, and makes evident his lack of journalistic balance and objectivity.

    In Conclusion: Monsanto vs. Dr. Shiva

    Michael Specter's New Yorker piece seems clearly intended to impugn the motives and character of Dr. Shiva. As we have shown in the preceding pages, he systematically excises important facts, studies and journalistic reports giving the false impression that concerns over Monsanto's monopolistic business practices and GMO products are unfounded. The opposite is true.

    Specter goes so far as to express sympathy for Monsanto, writing that "the gulf between the truth about GMOs and what people say about them keeps growing wider" and that Monsanto "is simply not that powerful." What he fails to mention is that Monsanto has spent tens of millions of dollars to kill laws that would require GMO foods to be labeled in US grocery stores. The company's power to defeat common-sense laws that most Americans support in principle – and thus keep people in the dark about whether they are ingesting GMOs – undermines Specter's portrayal of Monsanto as misunderstood and ineffectual.

    In addition to downplaying unsavory facts about Monsanto and GMOs, Specter also did his best to undermine Dr. Shiva's academic credentials. In fact, New Yorker editor David Remnick apologized to Dr. Shiva after Specter erroneously wrote that Dr. Shiva only had a bachelor's degree in physics. In fact, she has a master's degree in physics and a PhD in the philosophy of science. As such, she takes into account the scientific facts against GMOs and – unlike Monsanto – also weighs the moral questions.

    Malicious stories about people who the GMO industry considers threats are nothing new or unexpected. Monsanto has a long history of attacking its critics. In 1962, when Rachel Carson published Silent Spring – a landmark book about the destructive effects of pesticides often credited with launching the environmental movement – Monsanto went on the offensive. The company published a parody of Carson's work titled "The Desolate Year." It mocked Carson, portraying Earth as "a hungry world overrun by bugs" without DDT (a scenario that failed to unfold after the government banned DDT in 1972). Yet even today, decades after her death, Monsanto defenders like Rush Limbaugh continue to attack Carson for raising awareness of DDT's dangers.

    Specter is not the first journalist to come after Dr. Shiva nor will he be the last. Our goal in putting together this response is to highlight the manner in which GMO companies and their supporters demean their critics by ignoring facts, setting up "straw man" arguments and engaging in perfidious attacks. They pretend to have the weight of truth and science on their side but, as we have shown, they ignore many important facts and questions.

    As Specter himself acknowledges, Dr. Shiva articulates serious concerns that are shared by many people around the world. This is why attacks on her will not succeed. In the end, Dr. Shiva is simply one voice among tens of millions of other voices speaking out in defense of nature, health and justice.

    "Much of what she says resonates with the many people who feel that profit-seeking corporations hold too much power over the food they eat. Theirs is an argument worth making," wrote Specter.

    Rest assured Dr. Shiva's work will continue. Attempts to ridicule or silence her will not have the intended effect. Instead, they will only increase her visibility and thus her ability to speak forcefully on behalf of those struggling to survive the capitalistic monopolies of Monsanto et al.
